Heartwize CPR training session

Ruth, Stuart and Mel from the Heartwize charity led a fantastic CPR training session for 16 MRC members guiding us through CPR technique and how to use a defibrillator.

Hopefully we will never need to use these skills, but feel much more confident should a situation arise.

Thanks to all the kind donations from those attending, it will allow Heartwize to buy another resuscitation dummy.

A huge thanks to the volunteers for running the session.

An Ode to Nomad

One hot and sunny June day, some MRC runners decided to run the Nomad way.

Phil Scope ran the most, covering 50 miles, John, Vicky, Keren, Rowan & Marion a mere 50 K!

A few steady miles from Breaston to Draycott, With Sinfin runner Chris snapping quick photos on the spot.

Reaching the canal path was a great relief,Nice flat 6 miles with easy navigation, the promise of the first break a great motivation.

The checkpoints were very friendly with lots of crisps, cake and Coca cola.

After the first we ran with Marc Essex out for his morning training, He sensibly peeled off once we started complaining!

The 18 miles wall hit Rowan with a bang, while Ultra pro Keren Jones had long since flown.

Vicky Sheil only got stronger out of checkpoint 2, She and Emma Cull running on together, Vicky finished 5th lady in the 50 km race, whilst John and Rowan adopted a more scenic pace, With Marion and Sarah trotting along together, plus a friendly Smalley pair joining the crew.

The final few miles went by in a haze, Finished off with a much needed brew.

Would I recommend an Ultra?

Maybe if you dare.

But don’t worry about your minute miles or the hours on the clock, Think of how you will feel, to have run more than just round the block!

Sessions:
As we move more into summer and the holiday season, please be aware that we might be a bit thin on the ground for Leaders on some runs/sessions and I would like to keep, as far as I can, the sessions we have done going for long as possible. This includes the runs on Tuesday (both the group and workout sessions I have started) and the social runs on a Thursday. However, the club needs more members to help and if you want to help to lead a run, or you are interested in leading a run generally please feel free to talk to Ross or myself. I will try and keep information updated on Facebook as best I can.
2nd July:
5K TT (down the Sustrans – 7pm onwards) – this is the session for Tuesday evening, can we meet at the top of the Sustrans/Great Northern Line for 7pm to register with Ross, followed by a warm up before the race TT starts. This is a ‘naked’ run – which means without a watch (clear your minds!). For those who might not want to run the TT, James U is willing to lead an off road session, once again meeting/starting at the top of the Sustrans.

Race Results and Events Update
9th June: Derby Half/Ramathon.
A fab turnout of about 30 members took part in the event the other weekend meeting up at the new start base in the City outside the Quad. It was a bright, but cool summers day for us as we met up and gathered together to talk about our hopes and fears for the event. As for the event itself, first home was Matt Buller ahead of Mark Curtain while with the Ladies Emma was our first finisher with Raj 2nd lady home. I think a few of us set PBs or had really good runs so please email Emma at: results@mickleoverrunningclub.co.uk to have your times recorded, as they may get onto the Club Records 😊.
14th June: Hairy Helmet:
This annual event proved again to be a hit with the club (and the masses, over 250 teams) who turned up on an overcast and slightly damp Friday evening. We had 5 teams out and Matt B on the solo 90min challenge, and fair few about supporting them. I am sure you have seen some of the pictures on Facebook – just to show a fab fun evening it was. Summary of how our teams got on:

Team Overall Pos Category/Position Members
Quad Squad 41st Mixed Open/4th Aaron, Emma, Ewan & Rowan
Mixed Mob 95th Mixed Open/13th Paul D, Raj, Wilf & Lucy
Karma 112th Mixed Open/17th Clive, Vicky, Tom & Chloe
Whizzers 152nd Mixed 160/21st Paul W, Tracey, Al W & Nic
Bake off Banditos 168th Mixed 160/24th Dai, Kellie, John & Jacqui

Finally, I must mention Matt Buller, who less than a week after the Derby Half – goes out and runs in the HH 90min Solo Challenge. Here, he was 1 of only 2 runners to run 6 laps in the 90mins, to finish second overall (and less than 15secs behind the winner) – a really great performance by Matt – especially within a week of his run at the Derby Half.

Marathon Mountain Men: James K & James U who finished a trail marathon in Wales where I can say they both got round. Then there was Julian who while on holiday took part in a race that certainly looked drier than it did here in the UK!

Nomad: Congrats to Keren, John, Vicky, Marion & Rowan for completing the 50k version, while Phil finished the full 50miler. Well done all!

volunteering with Peak Running

On 15th June, a number of volunteers, led by Andy Brookes of Peak Running, ventured up to the Eastern Moors for a day of trail ruining and bridleway repairs....

Having received the request for volunteers, my initial thought was, where the heck is 'Eastern Moors'. Well, if like me you've never heard of it, it's an area between Baslow and Sheffield....

The idea was to meet up for a run in the morning, then an afternoon of repairing bridleways, working with the Eastern moors partnership, a collaboration between national trust and rspb.

The run was great, running through some of the lesser known areas of the peak district. We could, however, soon see why repairs were needed....

Our happy band of volunteers set to work repairing the muddy tracks. What no-one had told us was that our area was a valley with a river at the bottom which we would need to get several rock filled wheelbarrows across!....

We all found the day to be great fun and really rewarding, having repaired 250 metres of bridleway which should now (if we've done it right) shouldn't need further repair for a decade or more.....

It was brilliant to see the impact that our efforts had and to know many people will benefit i would really recommend this to anyone. Andy Brookes is planning more events so if you are interested, contact him through the peak running community Facebook page.

Below is a short video...

Ps trail running NOT ruining!!! 😂

DRS: Derby Run Series

The scores have been updated after Carsington and the club has moved upto 3rd place – behind Long Eaton and Smalley – so a fantastic effort for those of you who ran the Carsington 7+. Ross is currently our highest male in 7th with Andy F in 11th – both have run in the 2 races so far. Others scoring well inc: Matt B, Steve R, Lee. With the Ladies, it is Emma in 3rd so far, but Raj is not too far behind in 5th, with Lucy & Rowan also in the top 10. Hannah J is 18th and I suspect if she enters more, will push Emma & co close at the top! We have 16 men and 9 Ladies have scored points, so all round really well done at all. Scores from the Derby Half will be added in the next week or so.

Looking through both the Carsington & Derby Half results, a few members are listed without MRC listed, the downside to this is that their points will not be added to MRCs running total meaning points will be missing from our club score. Therefore, could members who have the EA affiliated, please where it is possible to add the club down (you will need your EA number), you will get a small discount on the entry fee, usually £2, but your finishing position will get converted to points which will be added to the club score. All points do count – just look at Smalley and it is why they led the DRS so far.

Club Championships

Ok, brief rundown of the ‘scores on the doors’ is as follows:

With the Ladies, Emma leads the way ahead of Raj – both of whom have ran in the 3 events so far, however, Rowan & Nic are not far behind. It is looking like it is between these 4 ladies.

As for the Men: Ross, Andy & Lee make up the top 3 – but with the likes of Aaron, Matt, Steve & Jamie all racing this could be a close call come November!

In the ‘Most Improved’ table – Clive has a very slender lead over Nick, Ross & Emma – but this is still very much on the open.

The full scores will be posted on the website shortly.

This is the final event I will be scouring through the results and from now on will only be looking for those members listed as MRC members, which means you have be EA affiliated.

The next event in our Championships is the Piggs 10k and the date of which has been announced as Weds 7th August. It is the 4th event and one where it is enter on the night, last year was only £5. A local event, on a route we know all too well, so why not 😊.

Rob Humber’s Stagathon
AUG 31

As you may be aware there is a MRC wedding this year when Rob Humber marries Kathryn Pound.

Apart from the big day itself there is another important day which is the stag doo.

As I am best man what else could we do other than a MRC running stag doo?

The plan is for a half marathon (pls feel free to run more) starting and finishing at the Vine Inn in Mickleover including stops at numerous pubs en route (drinking alcohol is mandated).

Sorry ladies but also in traditional stag doo etiquette it is for MRC MEN ONLY. Please see Kathryns Hen Run and Fun Click Here.

I hope you can make it to send Rob off in style!! 😁🏃‍♂️🍻🍻🍻
