Chair Update

This week I truly went to bed in winter and woke up in spring.

Halfway round my last run I realised I was actually sweating where normally at that point in my run I would just about to start felling my toes again.

Hopefully this nice spell will continue on through April as race season starts to get going with the first big race of the calendar approaches, the Derby 10k.

This is the first big MRC event where we really shake off the cobwebs, open the taps and run hard.

Then realise that 10k races really hurt and that maybe Marathons are better bet after all.

This year the number of MRC runners taking part in the Derby 10k will, I suspect, be slightly down on last year, where more than 20 of us took part, as we see a many of our members tackle London and Manchester Marathon just a couple of weeks later.

However I am sure there will be at least one of us who can’t resist the urge to do the Derby/Manchester double.

Notts 20 mile
by James Kelly.

Overall I enjoyed the Notts 20; was a great training run with my fellow marathon training gang (the Foley's)

As you will hear from the rest of the MRC crew we all had similar thoughts about the event, I’m never one for moaning but there was a few things that I hope the organisers will sort for next year as it’s handy having a 20 mile race besides the Ashby 20 that isn’t that far to travel.

There wasn’t any mile marker signs on the route which to be honest I didn’t notice till Dan mentioned it to me at the end of the race lol!

Wasn’t enough porter loos along the way either and about 10 miles in me Dan and Brad were dying for a 'number 1'. We were contemplating whether to go in the bushes but Dan was adamant we might get disqualified. It got to the point where me and Brad said we would just have to take the risk and veered off leaving Dan to carry on. About a mile down the road we came across Dan in the bushes as he also gave up on the hope that a loo was on the horizon.

The route in itself was good, had some nice scenic views along the way with the occasional hill that Dan liked to mentioned to us.

Only part of the route I wasn’t keen on was the part along the river where it was really narrow and unners were coming back in the opposite direction.

There was a part of the race that made me chuckle and that was when my arch running nemesis Paul Dolman appeared next to me lol last thing I wanted was to be drawn into a race as my game plan was going so well. Me Paul and Dan ran a good part of the race together from this point and had a good chat and a laugh along the way, the miles were just ticking by, couldn’t help but think how well my bootleg training plan was going.

As the last 2 miles approached Paul took off, it took every ounce of my will power not to chase him down but I’d done so well to stick to the plan and wanted to stick to it, as we all know I usually run the first part of my races too fast and then spend the second part holding on for dear life.

I stopped at what I thought was the finish line to have Dan tell me "mate this isn’t the finish line keep going." I wasn’t aware at the time but the finish line blew away, if the organisers knew this then maybe it would of helped sticking some marshals to help out on the finish line as a lot of people were making the same mistake.

Despite the few issues, I would run the race again next year

Time Trial

Last Tuesday saw the completion of the 9th MRC Time Trial. As always the event was hotly contested with members sprinting down Western Road to claim the spoils.

This time around we saw large number of first time competitors and even a number of first time visitors to the club who I’m sure didn’t expect to be busting a lung down Station Road when they headed out to the Royal British Legion for what, I’m sure, they thought would be a leisurely run around Mickleover.

First Past the post was Ben Roberts with a finishing time of 27:44, who also won the Ringers award for the most inaccurate time estimate, being almost 4 minutes out.

However all first time runners of the Time Trial did exceptionally well with many far exceeding their expectations which shows that you are all much stronger runners than you give yourself credit for and should all be incredibly prod of your achievements.

Rob Humber’s Stagathon
AUG 31

As you may be aware there is a MRC wedding this year when Rob Humber marries Kathryn Pound.

Apart from the big day itself there is another important day which is the stag doo.

As I am best man what else could we do other than a MRC running stag doo?

The plan is for a half marathon (pls feel free to run more) starting and finishing at the Vine Inn in Mickleover including stops at numerous pubs en route (drinking alcohol is mandated).

Route, pubs etc will be published nearer the time. Sorry ladies but also in traditional stag doo etiquette it is for MRC MEN ONLY.

I hope you can make it to send Rob off in style!! 😁🏃‍♂️🍻🍻🍻

Contact me (Paul Dean) directly or join the facebook event below.

Race Results and Events Update

We are near the end of March and really hitting the road season, so firstly best of luck to all – whatever event/distance you are doing over the forthcoming months.

I do try and keep up to date with things, but with the numbers in the club growing and the vast number of events that are out there it is difficult for me to track everyone.

So, please accept my apologies if I miss some of you.

Barcelona Marathon
Both Ewan and Ross ran well in Barcelona with Ewan finishing in just under 3.18 while Ross was just under 3.22 – both PBs – so congrats to the two of you.
Notts 20
A fairly new event on the calendar, cashing in on the pre-marathon runs and where we had 8 of our members running.

1st home was Brad F in 2:50:42, with Marc E following in 2:52:35. Dan F was 3rd in 2:55:17 just ahead of Paul D in 2:56:43 – who has started already his new battle with James K, who finished in 2:57:09. Clive was next in 3:05.55 with Shelly in 3:13:00 with our last member to finish was Sarah in 3:56:13.
Ashby 20
This ever popular event where we had just the 1 member running, with James Stevens finishing in 2.38.
XC
As for the XC, I now have the final individual results from the 4 races – where the best 3 races counted, and they are:
SMen: Aaron 14th
John B 21st
V40M: Wilf 4th
V50M: James S 5th
Alan 6th
SLad: Emma 3rd
V40L: Vicky 4th
V45L: Jacqui 7th
V50L: Tina 7th

Massive congrats to those mentioned, but also to all the members who ran in the 5 races over the winter period. They are hard work, but they also offer a great sense of achievement and a chance to represent the club first and foremost.

Ok, they may no be on everyone’s ideal marathon prep, but they do offer something different to ones normal running and training. So, for the winter 2019/20 – please think abut giving these ago and please remember you are representing the club at these races.

Future Events
7th April
The first big city marathon of the spring marathon season with numerous members running in Manchester (Dougal, Brad, Dan, John, Paul, James K – that I know of) while on the same day we have the Derby 10k, which also is the first event in the 2019 Club Championships.

I am sure we have several members running and so look forward to the usual pre-race meet up at Clough/Taylor Statue pre-race for the club photo.

28th April
That small event in London, the VLM London Marathon takes place – and we have again, numerous members off on the adventure. Best of luck to our Club Ballot Winner Nic (along with the marathon gang of Beckie, Amy, Shelly, Clive and Vicky and anyone else I may have missed!).
5th May
Great Northern 10k & Half
12th May
Sinfin 10k – race 2 in the Club Champs and race 1 in the DRS
19th May
Carsington 7 – race 2 in the DRS.
Away from racing, there are other events planned for the club and the members:
2nd April – Quiz Night
There is a run on – just 4 miles thou, then the quiz with the proceeds to Sense the Club Charity of the year and aid Nic & Beckie as they will be plodding round London a few weeks later.
23rd April
We have managed to secure the services of Chris Hollinshead, a fully Qualified EA Coach to lead a session for members. This is open to all members to take part and a chance to have a go at something a little different. This is the first in 3 sessions that will be led by Chris over the coming months. On this evening, the only other session on this evening is an easy 4mile run, led by Beckie – for those running VLM at the weekend.
Finally...
with spring kicking in and the change in the hour, we will be hopefully doing some different runs in the area.

I know James U wants to do some off road runs as he prepares for his off-road marathon, and some more structured sessions – just to vary it up a bit.

Structured sessions are where ones varies the run, so for example – some intervals, a tempo run and my fav fartleks – to name a few.

My groups have experienced this already – be warned 😉.

Finally, the club is looking to have a few more members on the LiRF (Leader in Running Fitness Course) to aid Ross, Raj & myself and we have started the process in this area.

However, I would like to say a big thank to all who have helped over the winter months be it directly leading or supporting a run.

The runs have gone well overall, and the assistance is very much appreciated by all within the club.

Let’s continue with the support of the club and its members all of which will help develop the club and keep its core values at heart.

Beckie & Nic rasing money for Sense

We are running the London Marathon fundraising for Sense, a charity that believes that no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, should be isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential.

Their experts offer personalised support through their centres, holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes.

They are here for everyone who needs them, for as long as they need them – providing early intervention for children, helping young people access education, and supporting the transition into adulthood and beyond.

This is a huge challenge, and Nic’s FIRST MARATHON!!!!!!
