RUN LEADER COURSE
Start 2021 with a new running challenge - become a qualified Run Leader!

Are you interested in adding a new aspect to your running life? Then becoming a Run Leader with MRC could be the thing for you. Due to restrictions in run group size and social distancing we are looking to increase the number of qualified Run Leaders within the club.

This would normally be an attendance course but, due to the current Covid situation, England Athletics are expecting that they will be starting an on-line course later this year.

You can get more information about the course and what the role involves from one of our lovely team of Run Leaders and also from the EA website under the Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) course.

Once we have information from EA regarding the new course format then we will be able to give more details about how many places will be available and when we are likely to start getting new Run Leaders trained.

If you wish to express an interest (with no commitment at this stage!) then just let myself welfare2@mickleoverrunningclub.co.uk or
Rob communications@mickleoverrunningclub.co.uk know.

my training story
NICHOLAS SOUTHORN
BOLTON IRONMAN 2021
Hello everyone! I hope you are all keeping well physically and emotionally.

For those who don’t know me, my name is Nik and I have been a member of the club for about a year and a half now. I am an advanced clinical practitioner at Derby Hospital and running is something that doesn’t come naturally to me at all! I exercise for two reasons – to keep my head straight and to keep the rapidly expanding dad-bod in check. I do, however, like a challenge: my very first organised run was the London Marathon in 2016.

Keeping to form, I recently entered into an event that is so ludicrously out of my comfort zone that I am truly anxious about it. The event is Ironman UK in Bolton 2021. If you aren’t sure, Ironman is a pretty extensive triathlon consisting of a swim (3.9 km), a bike ride (180.3 km), and a run (42.2 km) – a total of 226 KM (about 140 miles) covered in 17 hours. I have never done a triathlon before and I hate open water swimming – so I am off to a great start!

I can hear you now: “Why on earth would you, a self-proclaimed lazy chubby bloke, sign up for something as torturous as an Ironman?” Good question. Allow me to answer.

Your local hospital, as I am sure you know, does many wonderful things for the community. It isn’t perfect and like every other NHS institution we are plagued with tight budgets, pandemics, and overuse. While people like me and my colleagues might take good care of the people of Derby from a medical perspective, there are needs that require funding from alternative sources: patient welfare, clinical research, equipment, and staff training.

The comfort of patients is often overlooked yet without certain comforts ranging from toiletries to televisions would be sorely missed were they not available. Some departments depend on charitable donations for things like laptops, computer screens, and water coolers. None of these things would be possible without the kind donations of the community to the Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity. I strongly believe that we can all make a huge difference to patient welfare by donating to our local hospital. I believe this so much that I regularly put myself through physical purgatory on order to tempt people out of their hard-earned cash. Unfortunately, each year people expect more of me hence why from my original charity event in 2009 (a bungee jump) I have by graduation come to one of the hardest endurance events in the UK: Ironman.

My training has been quite basic if I am honest, just running and cycling long distances. However, I have recently started doing some more targeted and specific cardio training which includes something called “Blaze” at the gym, and other various HIIT sessions. I am, as always, on the lookout for training partners, so if you fancy a run, bike ride, or even a game of tennis (caveat: I am terrible and you must at least pretend to be terrible too) so if you are interested drop me a bell. I will be writing a series relating to my training journey for the MRC newsletter which will take us nicely to the big day: July 4th 2021.

Carsington 7+ is a 7.5 mile race around the stunning Carsington Reservoir.

Please note that the route has changed from previous years following a further comprehensive risk assessment to avoid narrow sections and therefore it could result in a slightly shorter race distance than normal. Please visit carsington7.co.uk for further information.

Runners complete a full clockwise circuit of the reservoir, taking in spectacular views across the water and the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. Mainly on cycle track, the course is flat in places but includes some moderate to steep inclines.

Tracey Griffiths
CLUB
WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHEN DID YOU JOIN MICKLEOVER RUNNING CLUB?
I ran with the club before we were officially a club and were part of the initial committee.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN A RUNNING CLUB?
Meeting like minded people and developing lasting friendships.
WHEN AND WHO DO YOU RUN WITH THE CLUB?
Typically I run on Tuesdays and run with whomever wis in the least speedy group! I tend to talk to any newbies as I always like to try and make sure people feel wecome.
TELL US YOUR HISTORY OF RUNNING?
I started running about 15 years ago on and off for the first few years, did the Nottingham Half Marathon in 2009 then had another 'break' as I had my second daughter.

Restarted again, principally running on my own and signing up for a few local races, mainly 10ks and then some half marathons, using it as an excuse for a day out or mini break somewhere!

I finally did my first marathon in 2015.

YOU
WHAT HAS BEEN YOU BEST RUNNING ACHIEVEMENT?
Getting under 2hrs for the half marathon and under 5hrs for the full. My training never goes quite to plan - life/work etc just get in the way and of course there's injuries and the 'whaever happens on the day' that can throw a spanner in the works so to achieve a PB is never easy or guaranteed so it's nice when it happens.
WHAT IS YOUR RUNNING AMBITION?
Right now it's to get back into running and complete all the races in 2021 that were postponed from 2020!

Also need to find my mojo first....! Achieving sub 2hr halves as the norm and a 4.30 marathon too would be lovely but I'm not dedicated enough to train hard!

If it happens that would be great but I also just love the experiences of running events so I'm not ever going to pressure myself to the point it's no longer fun for me.

WHY DO YOU RUN?
For 'me time'; and fitness.
FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN?
Anywhere!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORST RUN?
Great Northern Half Marathon a couple of years ago....it was soooo hot. Hated every single minute of it and felt pretty rough by the time it was over.

I hate running in the heat so it really knocked my confidence as I was due to run the Gothenburg Half two weeks later and the weather was looking like being hot again.

On the race day it was very hot but I took it really steady, there were lots of water stations (sponges/run through showers etc) and I paced it well, loved the whole event and finished smiling whereas my friends who also ran it over cooked (going out too fast) and then spent the evening broken whilst I was able to enjoy the post event beers and food!

BEST RUNNING PHRASE?
"Just keep running"
FAVOURITE RUNNING PHOTO?
Yorkshire Marathon 2019. I loved every second of the race, it was just sad that my running wife Jo was having such a horrendous time of it.
HAVE YOU EVER LOST YOUR RUNNING MOJO AND HOW DID YOU GET IT BACK?
All the time! I'm quite boom and bust and during lockdown I've definitely lost all motivation to run (I do better when I have an event to focus on). I'm looking at restarting next month slowly building up again.
BEST ROUTE AROUND MICKLEOVER/DERBY?
The Great Northern 10K route and then adding extra loops on depending on how fit/distance I'm focussing on.
WHO WOULD BE ON YOUR WISH LIST TO RUN WITH?
Eliud Kipchoge (clearly I'd need a motorised scooter!).

I love running with Jo and John from the club - we've had some fab runs and laughs and it will be great to get to the Hathersage Hurtle next May all fit and beat our position from last year :-)

WORST/BEST RUNNING ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Best advice is....go slow on your long runs

Worst advice...you should stop running as it's bad for your knees (from a non runner....obvs)

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU RUN?
I listen to podcasts so I tend to focus on those but when my mind drifts it's anything and everything but often it's a way for me to clarify some things and get a better perspective on something.
RUN TO TIME OR DISTANCE?
Distance
RACE/EVENTS
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RACE AND WHY?
So many! Favourite is probably the Gothenburg Half but probably because it was part of a weekend away with friends (some who ran, some just came along for the giggles) and we laughed, ate, drank and ran - it was the perfect weekend.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRE-RACE RITUALS AND FOOD AND DRINK.
Breakfast is always always always porridge and a black coffee.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD TO RUN, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
Whenever we go on holiday I take my trainers and running around the local streets/trails is always a great way of exploring the area.

Whilst I hate the heat I do like the look of the Petra Half Marathon for something different.

WHAT’S YOUR ONE RACE ESSENTIAL?
Trainers (too obvious)? Then sports bra!
WOULD YOU RUN A MARATHON WITHOUT GETTING A MEDAL?
No. I like the bling!

old skool nike advert // Men VS Woman
This 2009 from the Oregon-based athletic wear giant Nike “taps into the competitive spirit of young runners” and calls them to gendered action: “Join the Men vs. Women Challenge at Nikeplus.com”.

Runners entered the competition, which launched in early March 2009 and ended in late April of the same year (won by the men), through the Nike plus (Nike+)website, where they could purchase customizable athletic shoes and clothing as well as software for tracking distances run (RunningfromZombies 2009; Nike Runing 2011).

Acquisition of this software, compatible with iPods or a specially designed Nike+ SportBand, granted access to “the world’s largest running club,” a Facebook-like social network that continues to provide personalized training schedules and progress reports as well as opportunities for interacting with fellow runners.

Indeed, though the “Men vs. Women Challenge” has ended, the Nike+ network is still available, and maintainsan active user base, emphasizing the running community as a whole (Nike Running).
