Beth Pascall
Based in Belper, on the edge of the beautiful Peak District, Beth Pascall lives with her husband and enjoys running in the mountains, which she describes as allowing her to be free. When she’s not out running in the hills she works as junior doctor specialising in paediatrics. Beth loves the simplicity of running, the feeling of being connected to nature and the way of life it encourages her to have.

Beth is an inspirational woman, completing many punishing races on a mixture of terrain. Her blog is a brilliant read if you are interested: bethpascall.com

Her latest challenge, representing GB and sponsored by Salomon was tackling the 66-mile and 42-peak Bob Graham Round in the Lake District on 27th July.

A little history… In June 1932, Bob Graham (living in Keswick), set-off to become the first person to ever attempt this round. Not only did Graham complete the loop, but he did so in under 24 hours. Graham’s record of 23 hours and 39 minutes stood for 28 years until it was finally broken by Alan Heaton in 1960. Since then, the Bob Graham Round has seen over 2000 attempts. A select handful of runners have even finished the double round- a completion of the full loop, twice, in under 48 hours.

Beth clocked 14:34 for a women’s FKT to improve on the 15:24 which had been set by Jasmin Paris in 2016 - 50 minutes off! Not only is it a women’s record but it is the fifth-fastest ever time, with Kilian Jornet currently quickest overall with his 12:52 achieved in 2018!

MRC DOES VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON 2020
MRC won't be letting the cancelled VLM be something that stops our enthusiasm and love for all things marathon...so...

Between 1st Sept and the VLM elite marathon (Sunday 4th October), we have set a absolutely fantastic challenge for you all!

All you need to do is run any one of the following distances.

  • 26.2 miles
  • 26.2 Km
  • 2.62 miles or
  • 2.62 Km

Wait for it! In fancy dress of course!

Then post your run along with your photo/ selfie on MRC Facebook page.

We will then be having a celebrity to nominate the winner.

There will be a prize to the winner and also a prize to ANY mini MRC who run in fancy dress too (because they're awesome).

Good luck with our VLM MRC style

Food for Thought…..a brief update
Along with the rest country, we are still in a life of uncertainty with our running – as much with work & life. As we take the small steps going forward, we have all seen the news about more local lockdowns kicking in at short notice, resulting in even more uncertainty. In this last week we have seen VLM and York Marathons being cancelled as well as the HH event, and I am sure they will not be the only ones – so please be realistic about events coming up. Yet even in this, there are some guidelines for events to go head – all with a high degree of restrictions and procedures for event organisers and runners to follow.

The Belper Rover went ahead this last weekend, and I am aware of fell run events being held later this month and into Sept, and the Croft Canter (10mile off road) is till going ahead, but now social run with groups being set off at time intervals. Even ParkRun themselves have a plan to try and restart, but nothing really said yet. The EA guidelines are reasonable clear: run in groups of no more than 6!

If people want to run on a track: Moorways is open – but all runners have to pre-book a time, and the numbers are restricted. Shobnall in Burton – the track is still closed off for public use.

What has been good to see has been the number of groups going out over the months:

  • James U, Ewan & Malc with Nomad Venture 1
  • John S & co with Nomad venture 2
  • Andy and the super speedies going out
  • Myself leading a group out on Tuesdays – to name a few groups

This is addition to the various challenges that have been set up by various members of the club, and hopefully all of these will continue.

For example, I know James U is planning to run a virtual VLM on Oct 4th in and around Mickelover/Radbourne and I am looking at running 36miles along the National Forest Way in October.

If you are interested in either of these 2 events – please contact James U for the marathon or myself for the NFW. In addition to all of this, some members have asked about some more ‘structured’ runs which is something I am looking at – but, there are issues with this, once I know I will pass in information. Of course, the club will also be continuing with some new challenges.

I know Al mentioned about an app to aid with running/walking when out and about: Rungo which offers voice guided navigation. I’ll be honest, I have not used it – but there are other apps to aid with routes & mapping: OS, Komoot, Alltrails, Footpath Route Planner, Mapmyrun – to name a few. Most offer a free to use service, but with limited options, while the paid services offers a much wider range of addons. They all have pros & cons

Finally, I will say get out and run, after all, it is what we all have in coming – an enjoyment (even for some when they have done some of my sessions :D), a love of running – be it for physical or mental wellbeing – it is the one things that binds us together as a club – our running.

Most of all stay safe!

A Mile an Hour - Running a different kind of marathon

A different kind of marathon; running one lap an hour, for 24hrs. The rest of the time Beau Miles will do as much as possible; making things, odd jobs, fixing stuff. It's about running, doing, and thinking.
