2020/21 Membership renewal update
Although you’ll be aware that we still aren’t able to offer the usual set of club runs we have decided that we need to be ready to resume as soon as we can, as and when restrictions are lifted.

With this in mind we now have a plan for 2020/21 membership for both existing and new members.

what if i've already renewed?
If you have already paid your 2020/21 renewal (or have joined since lockdown) we are extending your club membership to cover the whole of the 2021/22 year too, all you will need to pay when renewals are due in March 2021 will be your EA affiliation if desired (expected to be £16).

You need not take any further action until next March.

I haven't renewed yet
Members who hadn’t yet renewed when we went into lockdown will be offered free club membership for the remainder of the 2020/21 year, if you require EA affiliation you will only need to pay their fee of £15.

Please find the link to renew here you will need to complete the webform even if you are taking up the unaffiliated free option.

new members
We are also re-opening membership to new members to the club at the cost of £20 affiliated and £5 unaffiliated until the end of the year.

I had previously mentioned pro-rata refunds but for a club run by volunteers that would have proved quite a task to process, so I hope you’ll understand the newly agreed approach.

If you have any questions or concerns please do get in touch membership@mickleoverrunningclub.co.uk.

See you soon.

COVID-19 statement
Dear MRC Members,

Following on from previous MRC communications on the Covid-19 restrictions, we will still not be able to provide “the old normal” MRC club runs in the near future. We have however, been continuing to look at different ways of getting our members running again. We recognise that the lock down period has been a really difficult time for many of our members and, hopefully even small changes in what we are able to do as a club will go some way to help get back to some level of normality.

You will have seen the many virtual runs and challenges that have been setup over the lock down period and these are set to continue, some with fantastic prizes! However, we have also been investigating how we can get more small group runs to take place whilst following England Athletics guidelines. Although we will not be running official MRC runs, we would like to encourage our members to arrange small group runs of up to 6 people (including the organiser) via the MRC Facebook page.

Impressively Matt Buller hit sub 6 minute miles completing it in 00:29:30 sneaking ahead of Ewan (00:33:46) to quickest lap and Lucy was the fastest lady with 00:44:59 beating nic by only 4 seconds (00:45:03).

PLOGGING MRC STYLE
August 1st and 2nd saw MRCs first plogging weekend. For those who may not have been heard of Plocka or Plogga , this is a Swedish running/ jogging activity combining the joy of a jog with picking up litter- what's not to love?!!

There was a huge uptake from MRC runners and their kids, even dogs were taken to help sniff out hidden rubbish that lurked under bushes.

It proved so popular that another plogging weekend has been planned for 5th and 6th September. So grab your gloves, bin bags and litter pickers !

Congratulations to the prize winners Katie, John, Tracey and Al .

Make sure you all recycle your empty bottles and sweet bags.

on the run with ...
Hannah Jones
One of my first memories of running is at primary school around the school field at sports day, where the reward was strawberries and cream... Maybe it was this sparked my love for running. You’ll notice reading this that food is often in my thoughts!

It was in High School that I really began to take running seriously, competing in Cross Country races and training at lunchtime with a few mates and my physics teacher.

Athletics became a big part of my life and would involve several trips a week, on a coach to the ‘local’ track (a mere 30miles away from my parents house!) Joys of living in rural Mid Wales aye!

When I ran for East Wales in a XC champs I knew running needed to continue to be in my life throughout Uni as it gave me something nothing else does and always will I think...

CLUB
WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHEN DID YOU JOIN MICKLEOVER RUNNING CLUB?
I joined Mickleover Running Club in September 2018 after moving to Derby from North Wales.

I will always remember the warm welcome I had, especially from Paul who promptly answered my email re joining the club. It was also the detailed map that Alan sent me to show me where we meet that made me feel at ease and knew that I wouldn’t regret choosing Mickleover Running Club.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN A RUNNING CLUB?
Hands down, it is the sheer uplift and positive motivation that running with a club gives you that during lockdown I think we have all taken for granted.

I miss the social integration and warmth we give each other - roll on re- starting!

YOU
WHAT HAS BEEN YOU BEST RUNNING ACHIEVEMENT?
I think my biggest running achievement has to be completing an Ultra Marathon in June 2017 from Harlech to Abersoch, 42 miles of total body pain... But huge elation when we finished.

I ran with my best friend and I think we helped each other finish. My parents were at feed stations and it was Mum’s egg and cress sandwiches (told you it’s all about the food!) that fuelled our determination.

It was a few days later that we found out we came 3rd, and if you’d told me that on the day I wouldn’t have believed you!

WHY DO YOU RUN?
I run to keep fit, for mental wellness, to see my friends, to get outdoors, to race... The list is endless!
FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN?
With my favourite place probably being between the French Alps and Snowdonia!

Both giving a mix of trail, snow, mountains, beaches and lakes (to cool off in post run!)

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORST RUN?
Worst run, gosh has to be Snowdon Race 2016... Fatigued from the off. And I will never forgot my Mum’s face when she saw me walking after 50metres from the start.

Later saying “Are you sure this running is good for you?!” Haha.

My Mum now runs three times a week and loves it.

I found out a week later that I was severely anaemic during that race, hence the fatigue... But we have to remember not to be too hard on ourselves, we all have off days!

And that was one of mine.

BEST RUNNING PHRASE?
Best running phrase, well more like a quote... “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire”.

Running sets mine on fire... And the picture above sums that up for me!

This was Snowdon Race two years on and I smashed my PB.

Although two mins after this pic was taken I had a nasty fall - but completed the race.

We all have war wounds and I have many on my knees!

WHO WOULD BE ON YOUR WISH LIST TO RUN WITH?
I would love to run with Paula Radcliffe, she was a huge inspiration for me growing up and still is to be honest.
WORST/BEST RUNNING ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Hm worst running advice - “Ooo it’s not good for the knees!”

(Not true...)

Best advice - join Mickleover Running Club!

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU RUN?
On some days I think about a lot of things whilst running and others nothing at all and enjoy the moment!

It’s definitely a de-stress for me as working as a Midwife can be stressful. And so easy to do too... Just need a good pair of trainers and you’re off!

RUN TO TIME OR DISTANCE?
Always run to distance... Sorry!
RACE/EVENTS
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RACE AND WHY?
Blimey, favourite race! Too many! Even though it’s not a running race, a race a really loved taking part in and training for was the Half Ironman I did in 2016.

Just amazing support and taking part with friends was just awesome...!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRE-RACE RITUALS AND FOOD AND DRINK.
Pre race rituals... Where do I start!

For people that know me I’m quite specific/particular and maybe a little superstitious! So my routine has got to be exactly the same each race day.

Wake up 3 hours before race.

2 hours pre race eat huge bowl of porridge, made with almond milk, spoonful of peanut butter melted in topped off with half a banana, chopped nuts, blueberries and a hug squirt of honey. Green tea to drink and 2 pints of water.

I always wear the same outfit too, I won’t go into details but you know what I mean! Hehe.

WHAT’S YOUR ONE RACE ESSENTIAL?

One race essential - picking the right pair of trainers (last count = 32!) Oops!

WOULD YOU RUN A MARATHON WITHOUT GETTING A MEDAL?
Yeah I would race without a medal to finish.

Most race in North Wales have Welsh slate coasters... Slowly getting a collection, hoping to make some thing pretty cool from them!

Happy running!

Hope to see you soon at club!
