the only thing that stays the same is change...
Hello and welcome to the first newsletter of 2021 and huge thank you to all who made the AGM on Monday.

It's an honour to take over from Ross as Chair of this great club and I look forward to helping as many people as possible smash their running goals as possible in the coming year.

We have made a great start with signing up 7 members to take part in the England Athletic run leader course to add to current squad of 11 already qualified, we shouldn’t have a problem providing a variety of runs on a Tuesday and Thursday night once we get going again.

Regarding the new committee, I’d just like to welcome Nic & Becky who will be taking on the role of Covid- Coordinator with Kel & Becky taking on the XC Captain(s) role. Great to have you join the team.

Just a quick round of applause for James and Lucy who have been at the club from the start and continue to willingly give up their free time to help out, James making us the best kitted out club on the circuit and Lucy making sure we don’t go bankrupt!

The committee and myself have loads of ideas which we need to get together and talk out but if you have any ideas... please contact me directly at chair@mickleoverrunningclub.co.uk, my inbox is always open.

Stay safe everyone,

Rob

NEW RUN LEADERS

We are currenlty putting a number of members on the LiRF (Leadership in Running Fitness) course who put their names forward as wanting to help out on club runs once we fire back up post lockdown.

The course is designed to help the Run Leader provide a safe and enjoyable running experience for all our members of any ability and covers risk assessment, warm-ups, cool downs, and how to lead fun running sessions.

Without the help of Vic, John and Louise gaining funding from England Athletics, it would not have been possible to get so many members on the LiRF so it really is a massive thank you to them.

If you are interested or would like to learn more about the course, please use the link below or contact our Run Coordinator Sarah directly.

Why you should run in cold weather
If you’re struggling to brave the cold, here’s why running when the mercury drops is a smart move… and how to maximise the benefits.

It’s not often we have cause to envy hedgehogs, but their ability to snooze through winter can seem pretty desirable when its particularly nasty outside.

It can be all too tempting to bunker down for a runners’ hibernation of sofa and box sets, but that would mean missing out on a multitude of training benefits.

Here’s why you should turn your thinking on its head and learn to embrace the joys of running in wintry conditions.

contiune ready at runnersworld.com...

also bulk.com have an article on benefits of cold weather running.

MRC ROAD SIGN CHALLENGE
Just for fun, all you need to do is run around the streets!

This weeks word is "V.A.L.E.N.T.I.N.E." and bonus work "S.A.I.N.T."

Post pics on facebook as proof.

Good Luck

CLUB
WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHEN DID YOU JOIN MICKLEOVER RUNNING CLUB?
Started running in 2012 after giving up Sunday League football and taking up triathlon. Moved to Mickleover from Belper a year ago and because its harder to run socially with my Belper 10:20 Tri team mates I joined MRC a couple of months ago to find people to run with and to maintain my motivation that can dip when it gets cold.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN A RUNNING CLUB?
Camaraderie and support from people who have the same interests and goals - whatever your level
WHEN AND WHO DO YOU RUN WITH THE CLUB?
Unfortunately nobody yet thanks to C-19 preventing the group runs. However the virtual challenges and the FB Group help make me feel a part of the club
TELL US YOUR HISTORY OF RUNNING?
Other than chasing a ball around a football field there was no running history until I took up triathlon. It has developed from being an evil I needed to do to get over the finish line at a triathlon to something I really enjoy.
YOU
WHAT HAS BEEN YOU BEST RUNNING ACHIEVEMENT?
Being lucky enough to run and finish the London marathon in 2017. Close behind are the two other marathons I've completed...both to finish full ironman distance races.
WHAT IS YOUR RUNNING AMBITION?
To run a half marathon in under 2 hours. I have completed a 10k fast enough to show its possible but at the age of 58 its getting harder to believe I'll ever do it.
WHY DO YOU RUN?
To keep both mentally and physically fit.
FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN?
Anywhere away from traffic and preferably with a view....that's not too hilly
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORST RUN?
Half marathon to finish the Sundowner Tri in 2018. Didn't prepare, didn't fuel, didn't hydrate. Finished with my calves cramping that badly I could barely walk. Lesson learnt!
BEST RUNNING PHRASE?
A marathon is 80% mental and the other 20% is in your head
FAVOURITE RUNNING PHOTO?
Please see above...
HAVE YOU EVER LOST YOUR RUNNING MOJO AND HOW DID YOU GET IT BACK?
Yes after training through the winter of 2016/17 then competing in numerous early season 10k's and half marathons as training events for the London Marathon followed by a full iron triathlon and two half iron triathlons all in 2017. I was physically shattered and didn't really get going again until spring 2018. I just got out there and remembered why I did it in the first place.
BEST ROUTE AROUND MICKLEOVER/DERBY?
Station road, Radbourne Lane, Heage Lane and up the track. Basically the Great Northern route. A nice steady 10k..
WHO WOULD BE ON YOUR WISH LIST TO RUN WITH?
Anybody who is good company
WORST/BEST RUNNING ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Never really had any bad advice. Best advice was when trying to decide how many layers to wear pick whatever feels comfortable standing still at the start and take a layer off.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU RUN?
Everything, anything and nothing. Always helps clear my mind
RUN TO TIME OR DISTANCE?
Distance. Never look at my watch when running....although I still always like to check my average minutes/mile at the end.
RACE/EVENTS
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RACE AND WHY?
London marathon....the atmosphere. Closest I'll ever get to feeling what its like to be a professional sports person
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRE-RACE RITUALS AND FOOD AND DRINK.
Fuel with porridge for breakfast, eat a banana not too far from the start and sip Tailwind. I tend to go a bit quiet and don't really like to talk to anybody.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD TO RUN, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
I've travelled quite extensively for business and pleasure and run in many of the places I've been...its a great way to look around the area. Always happiest in Derbyshire.
WHAT’S YOUR ONE RACE ESSENTIAL?
Wear a cap. Helps me focus and stops the sweat running in my eyes.
WOULD YOU RUN A MARATHON WITHOUT GETTING A MEDAL?
I have...and I would do it again
