This Sunday should have been the Derby 10K.
Who could have even imagined 4 weeks ago as some of us were starting to think about our last long marathon runs or preparing ourselves for the Spring races that we were on the edge of a global pandemic.

It’s all been a bit of a rollercoaster and I’m sure it goes without saying that MRC wishes all of our members, their families and friends a safe route through these challenging times.

To try and provide a little bit of levity we’ve started to fill the MRC Facebook page with happy memories with amongst other things our Throwback Thursday.

Clive challenged people to run as far as they can in the garden…and it’s fair to say the Mini MRCers are smashing it!!

If you have any other ideas for fun challenges please do pop them on the facebook page or drop us an email.

2020/21 Membership renewal update
In the last newsletter I shared with you all details of the 2020/21 membership renewal which is due during the month of March each year. That post seems a long time ago now... life has changed, club runs have ceased for the time being and all events for the next few months are cancelled.

So where does that leave us with our membership renewals and fees?

Well firstly a big thank you to the 50+ members who has renewed so far, we have even had a few renewals after we stopped club runs which is a big show of support for the club.

I am aware that I have been a little quiet on the subject over the past couple of weeks, in happier times I'd have been prompting you all via Facebook & email to get renewing for sure! However with new government directives being issued daily club membership took a back seat for a while and we awaited guidance from England Athletics as to how they would make adjustments to their fees this year now that we have a much shortened running season to look forward to.

Well, on 26th March came the announcement we had been awaiting, and... very disappointing it was too!

England Athletics advised us that there would be no reduction in club affiliation fees and no reduction in members affiliation fees either, although they have waived the £1 increase in members affiliation fees that they had previously proposed for 2020/21. Not really in line with supporting the membership during these difficult times, nor representative of the reduced time for which we see benefit from our membership. Rest assured myself and other Membership Secretaries have let them know how we feel about this!

So, in terms of Clubs renewals, we won't be looking to collect any more renewal fees until club runs are confirmed as being back on, and at that time we will review the fees for the rest of the year.

If you are one of the many who have renewed already we will make sure that you are reimbursed accordingly when a decision on fees has been made, however if you would prefer a refund now of your 2020/21 renewal fees drop me an email at membership@mickleoverrunningclub.co.uk and I’ll get that sorted for you.

Stay home, stay safe and see you all soon.

Thank You
So many of our members are Key Workers, carrying the load whilst the rest of us try our best to not do anything stupid and add to their work.

We can’t thank you enough ... If we had medals you’d have them all!!

Keeping Fit
As our new normal kicks in for a bit we can, for now, still run / cycle / walk.

Just follow the guidelines...no running in your own clothes in the morning then wearing a disguise in the afternoon...

YouTube – there’s no shortage of online videos helping you to stay fit and there’s of course Joe Wicks ‘the nations PE teacher’ live every Monday – Friday at 9am ... we’ve managed a few family sessions whilst streaming with the Sheil and Shakespeare household on WhatsApp!

Final XC Race of the 2019-2020 season
What a fantastic end to a fantastic season for MRC in the cross country league. On the eve of race 6 I was worried that we wouldn’t get a good turnout for the final event and not be able to make up full teams, so many of our runners were having to do long runs for their marathon training programmes. I should have known better -Team MRC wasn’t going to let me down! We had a brilliant turnout of runners and for the first time since being part of this league, MRC has managed to enter full teams for every race.

This last race wasn’t going to be easy though. The Sinai Park route is shorter than some, being around 5 miles in total, but it was muddy and undulating. The gooey mud was thick and heavy and in places your feet would slide to the side and grip was difficult, whatever footwear you had chosen. Then there was THE HILL. There are several inclines on this course, but this one is evil.. it is steep, slippery and the path is bounded by brambles and other horrible spiky plants. Those who were unfortunate enough to start sliding backwards down the hill were forced to try and hold onto either these uncomfortable branches or else a random fellow runner. Towards the end we did have a long stretch of flat, gravel pathway (thank you Sarah for marshalling, your support at this stage was very gratefully received) and a good downhill grassy slope to finish.

Despite the tough course, the results for MRC were amazing. I have to start with the ladies results: Hannah J was first to finish for MRC and her incredible run meant that she was first lady overall with Emma finishing in a super second place and myself, Beckie and Jane all finishing in the top 30. These outstanding results meant that the ladies team finished in 2nd place for race 6, our best position to date. For the men Matt was first back, finishing in a brilliant 16th place. He was followed by Mark G in 21st place, making his MRC XC debut. Wilf was close behind in 22nd, then we had Paul D, James S, Nigel, Jake, Michael (another first time out for MRC in the XC) and John B. Another great team result, with the men finishing in 5th place for race 6.

For the overall season MRC have done very well this year. As I mentioned before we have managed to get complete teams out for every race and have performed consistently well across this season. The final overall team positions were 3rd place for the ladies, 5th place for the men and 5th place for the mixed team, what a great result for our club.

The XC league also give out awards to those individuals finishing 1st and 2nd in their age categories. This year I am delighted to announce that Hannah J finished as second senior lady. Phenomenal work Hannah, congratulations!

I would just like to thank everyone who has taken part in the cross country this year, it really has been a lot of fun getting out there in the mud and hills with such a great group of people. I am looking forward to the next season and hope to see everyone out there again and hopefully some new faces too.

Looking for some Olympics Nostalgia...
Facebook/TeamGB has the opening of London 2012 available...a lovely way to fill 3 hours of your life!!

It brought back some great memories….my personal favourites were watching the Womens Weightlifting final at the Excel area (you you’re your chance on whatever tickets you could get right...) and then watching on the large screen the special evening Greg Rutherford, Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill got the treble gold.

THE MICKLEOVER RUNNING CLUB VIRTUAL quiz night
Using Zoom Video Conferencing software we are hoping to bring the club together with an evening of fun.

We are in the testing stage so please keep an eye on the MRC facebook page. We are aiming to do it on a Tuesday night at 7pm in a way to replace the club run and if successful make it a weekly thing during this mad time.

CORE, STRENGTH & CONDITIONING online videos
Gym group David Lloyd launches virtual workouts, activities and challenges for all ages.

As gyms across the country close, and exercise outside the home is limited to one walk, run or cycle a day, staying fit and healthy is on a lot of our minds.

In response to the lockdown, leisure and fitness giant David Lloyd Clubs — founded by former professional tennis player David Lloyd — is offering a whole host of at-home work out options, providing virtual workouts, advice and activities of all levels for adults and children.

In an effort to boost the nation's spirits the brand says the workouts are: "designed to re energise the body and mind" and that they can "easily be done at home or in the garden."

Check them out using the link below.
